A Nigeria nurse, Chiemela Nonye has accused Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Nkiruka Ugwu, of Area ‘M’ Command, Idimu, Lagos, of coercing her into giving false testimony in a rape case. Nonye claims that CSP Ugwu paid her to falsely accuse an individual of rape and has since threatened her life to keep her silent during the ongoing investigation at Area ‘D’ Command, Mushin.
CSP Ugwu, when contacted, categorically denied the allegations, stating, “I told her (Nonye) never to involve my name. She can’t try it. Why would she involve my name? Am I fighting her with Amuche? She should go ahead and do whatever she wants to do. If it is my case she wants, I am ready for her. She cannot try to mention my name.”
When asked about accusations of locking the shop of the minors' mother and instructing touts to kill her if she attempted to reopen it, CSP Ugwu responded dismissively, “I have nothing to say. They can all go ahead with whatever they want to do. I am not a sister to Amuche. God forbid, I am not.”
The case took a new turn when Nonye was arrested by the police at Area D Command, Mushin, on January 22, 2025, following a petition from Mr. Ekwenyu Uchenna. Uchenna claimed that Nonye had falsely testified against him, alleging that she had witnessed him defiling three teenage siblings in April 2024.
As a result of these allegations, Uchenna was detained for seven days at the Alausa Police Division before being transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja, where he spent an additional three weeks in detention. Following a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, detectives found no evidence to support the allegations, leading to Uchenna's release.
Both Uchenna and the mother of the minors were initially arrested following claims by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Philomena Ehiokhilen, who alleged that the mother had conspired with Uchenna to rape her children. Upon his release, Uchenna petitioned Area D Command, Mushin. During interrogation, Nonye admitted in a written statement that she had been paid an undisclosed amount by CSP Ugwu to fabricate the allegations against Uchenna and the minors' mother.
In a recorded telephone conversation between Nonye and the minors' mother, Nonye could be heard pleading for forgiveness and revealing that CSP Ugwu had threatened her life if she mentioned her name.
The conversation went as follows: Nurse Nonye: “I don’t know why I agreed to this. As I speak with you, I’m in tears. Please forgive me. I didn’t know why I agreed to frame Uchenna. Please help me apologize to Uche.” Mother of minors: “We are all human. I know how both of us were. I went to my lawyer’s office and explained everything, telling him it was not you. You were pushed into this. If he wants to speak to you, he can confirm you were pushed out of ignorance. After hearing from you, if they find out you were misled, they will know how to exclude you from the matter. So, leave Uchenna out of this because I have told him you are not the main problem. CSP Ugwu is the real problem. She pushed you into this.”
In a conversation with Vanguard, the mother of the three minors alleged that CSP Ugwu had threatened her life numerous times and had also killed her business ventures.
