The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to officially unveil Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles on Monday. The unveiling ceremony will take place at the Media Conference Room of the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, starting at 11 am.
The NFF Executive Committee confirmed Chelle's appointment on Tuesday 7th January, 2025, acting on a recommendation from the Technical and Development Committee. The 47-year-old Franco-Malian coach will take charge of one of the most high-profile positions in world football.
According to NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Chelle embodies the fresh energy, new thinking, and positive attitude needed to propel the Super Eagles forward. According to Gusau, "Chelle possesses the ideal qualities to steer the Super Eagles to success."
The NFF has appealed to Nigerians to rally behind Chelle, despite initial mixed reactions to his appointment. “We appreciate the fact that Nigerians are very passionate about the game of football, and that is the reason for the different tones of reactions following the appointment of Coach Chelle. However, the NFF hereby appeals to Nigerians to come together and support him, as we believe he has the qualities to achieve success with the Super Eagles.
“The NFF will give him all the support that he needs to succeed in the job.”
During Monday's unveiling, the NFF will also announce the names of Chelle's assistants. The coaching crew will first guide the Super Eagles B team at the African Nations Championship in East Africa next month, before focusing on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Chelle previously led Mali's national team to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He left his position as head coach of Algerian side MC Oran to take up the challenge with the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles will face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in their next 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in March. With Chelle at the helm, Nigerian football fans will be hoping for a successful campaign.
