Nigerian singer May D has dropped a jaw-dropping claim, stating that he was once on par with, and even bigger than, music heavyweights Wizkid and Davido. During a revealing chat on The Honest Bunch podcast, May D declared that years ago, he, Wizkid, and Davido were the top three artists dominating Nigeria’s music scene.
“Then it was Wizkid, David, and I. I was even like bigger. Wetin be ‘Holla at Your Boy’ compared to ‘Soundtrack?’” he said confidently, referencing his breakout hit, which propelled him to stardom during his time with Square Records.
May D didn’t stop there. He revisited his fallout with the iconic duo P-Square, claiming that his departure from their label derailed what could have been a stellar career trajectory. According to the singer, if he hadn’t parted ways with Square Records in 2012, Grammy-winning star Wizkid wouldn’t have been able to match his level of success.
The singer rose to fame after signing with Square Records in 2011 but parted ways with the label under contentious circumstances. Since then, he has spoken candidly about the challenges he faced, including alleged poor treatment and missed opportunities during his time with the label.
Fans and critics alike have taken to social media to debate May D’s assertions. While some acknowledge his talent and early influence in the industry, others argue that comparing himself to Wizkid and Davido, who have achieved global acclaim, is a stretch.
As May D continues to share his untold stories, one thing is certain: the conversation around his legacy and what could have been is far from over. Could May D have truly rivaled Wizkid and Davido’s current success if not for his setbacks? Fans are left to wonder.
