Nigerian singer May D, known for his soulful hits, has revealed shocking details about his struggles while signed to P-Square’s Square Records.

In a candid interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, the artist painted a bleak picture of his time with the legendary R&B duo, alleging poor treatment and missed opportunities.

According to May D, during his four years with the label, he didn’t have access to proper accommodation or even a bank account. “When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room in P-Square’s house. He was like, ‘May-D, is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here.’ If I had a room, it would have been cooler,” the singer shared, hinting at the subpar conditions he endured in the duo’s mansion.

Even more shocking was his claim that he couldn’t open a bank account due to lack of funds. “It’s only when someone has money that he opens an account,” he said, emphasizing the financial struggles he faced despite being under one of Nigeria’s most prominent record labels at the time.

May D also accused P-Square of sabotaging his career when it came to international opportunities. He recounted how Akon, the global music icon, expressed interest in signing him during the shoot for the Chop My Money Remix in the U.S. However, May D alleged that P-Square intervened, blocking the deal and effectively cutting short what could have been a major breakthrough with Akon’s Konvict Music.

The singer, who joined Square Records in 2011 and was let go in 2012, has since made a name for himself in the Nigerian music industry. However, his revelations have reignited debates about how artists are treated within the Nigerian music ecosystem, especially by record labels.

As fans digest these revelations, many are questioning the dynamics behind the scenes of Nigeria’s most celebrated music acts. Could this be a wake-up call for better artist-label relationships? The conversation continues.
