In a shocking incident that has left many outraged, Imo State police have arrested 35-year-old businesswoman Edith Nwachukwu for allegedly assaulting her 13-year-old house help, Kelechi Ejieke.
The arrest followed a dramatic rescue at Relief Market in Owerri on Tuesday evening, where traders intervened to save the minor from further harm. Witnesses reported that Nwachukwu had inflicted severe injuries on the young girl and demanded more than ten pieces of cane to continue the beating.
The girl, identified as Kelechi from Amaeke Adam in Abia State, was taken to a hospital due to the severity of her injuries. Nwachukwu, who initially claimed her actions were provoked by allegations of theft, later pleaded for mercy. The house help, however, denied the accusations, saying she was unfairly targeted.
Activist Chidiebube Okeoma, who raised the alarm, praised the traders and police for their swift action. “Child battering is a crime,” Okeoma stated. “Our organization, Stand for Humanity Foundation, will ensure justice is served to deter others from dehumanizing children.”
Imo State Police Command spokesperson Henry Okoye reaffirmed the force’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, emphasizing the zero-tolerance policy of Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma against child abuse and related crimes.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter measures to protect children from such inhumane treatment. As investigations continue, the public awaits justice for Kelechi.
