Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared the reason behind his billionaire father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, stepping in to buy him out of his first professional recording deal in 2011.

The ‘Dami Duro’ hitmaker disclosed that he had signed a deal with Black Diamond Promotions early in his career. However, his father intervened after hearing a snippet of Davido’s breakout song, ‘Dami Duro,’ and decided to secure full ownership of his son’s music masters.

In response to a tweet from his former record label boss, Tosin Ashafa, who reminisced about signing Davido to his first official contract, the singer expressed his gratitude, saying, “So much respect to you guys for allowing me walk!! Just know u were part of something that turned out to be phenomenal!!”

Davido further clarified the timeline, debunking claims that the deal was in 2019. “No, I signed the contract in 2011… It was a good contract, not bad! But daddy wanted me to have 100 percent of whatever I was doing, especially after I played him the first cut of the ‘Dami Duro’ video in his office. He knew it was game time!”

After his father bought him out of the deal, Davido and some family members formed HKN Music, a label that propelled his early hits. He later branched out to create his own record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), cementing his place as one of Africa’s biggest music icons.

This story highlights the pivotal role Davido’s father played in shaping his career, ensuring he maintained control of his music and legacy from the start.
