On the occasion of World AIDS Day, the Rotary Club of Abuja Jabi Lakeside has called for a collective commitment to address the ongoing challenges posed by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
In a statement issued on Sunday, President Amobi Ogum highlighted the critical need for improved healthcare access and education within the community.
Ogum emphasized that despite advancements in treatment and prevention, millions continue to be affected by HIV. He noted that approximately 90 million people are currently living with the virus, with nearly 45 million having lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses.
The Rotary Club urged community members, healthcare providers, and policymakers to work together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure that everyone has access to necessary healthcare services.
The club's message serves as a reminder that through collaboration and compassion, significant strides can be made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, ultimately leading to a healthier and more informed society.
"As at the end of 2023, around 40 million people were reported to be living with HIV worldwide. Sadly, Africa has been the hardest hit by this epidemic, with one in every 30 adults living with HIV, accounting for more than two-thirds of the global population living with HIV", he stated.
"As Rotarians, today presents an opportunity to reflect on how far we've come in addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis. But more importantly, it is a call to action. As people of service, we must recognize that in many communities, access to treatment is still limited, and basic education about the disease remains a significant challenge", he added.
"Additionally, in collaboration with some NGOs and a few of our friends, we will distribute condoms to underserved areas as a small but meaningful step toward raising awareness and curbing the spread of the virus", the statement noted.
He called for a united front in addressing the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, highlighting the importance of education and awareness in creating a supportive environment for those affected; "collective action driven by empathy and a shared commitment and responsibility to build a healthier world."
