Olivia Hussey, the beloved actress who captivated audiences as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73. Her portrayal of Shakespeare’s tragic heroine earned her global acclaim and a Golden Globe for “New Star of the Year.”
Hussey, born Olivia Osuna in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was the daughter of an Argentine opera singer and a British legal secretary. Moving to London at a young age, she trained at the Italia Conti Academy, where her talent was quickly recognized.
At just 15 years old, she landed the role of Juliet, starring opposite Leonard Whiting in a film that would become a cinematic classic and an Oscar winner.

In recent years, Hussey and Whiting made headlines when they filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures in 2023, alleging exploitation related to a controversial nude scene in the film. While the case was dismissed, Hussey maintained in past interviews that the scene was tastefully shot and that both she and Whiting were aware of its context in the story.
