Renowned social activist and skit maker, Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr. Macaroni, has raised concerns about the increasing use of law enforcement to target individuals over political differences.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Mr. Macaroni criticized the Nigerian police for allegedly allowing themselves to be weaponized by the elite to oppress ordinary citizens.

Mr. Macaroni’s remarks came after lawyer and political activist Dele Farotimi was arrested following a defamation petition by senior lawyer Afe Babalola. The police reportedly seized phones, harassed Farotimi’s staff, and transported him from one state to another.

The activist described the situation as a gross abuse of power, pointing out the irony of Farotimi’s arrest in the context of his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System:

“Dele Farotimi wrote a book called Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, and the brazen impunity which the book seeks to address is playing right before our eyes.”

Macaroni highlighted the systemic issues that allow civil disputes to be treated as criminal cases, stating:

“This is what happens when we support that civil matters be treated as criminal matters because of political differences or stanship. The Nigerian police continue to allow themselves to be used by the ‘High and Mighty’ to oppress Nigerians.”

Macaroni questioned the double standards in Nigeria’s justice system, where influential figures use law enforcement to silence critics without facing any consequences for their own actions:

“Our system of corruption allows the innocent man who hasn’t been proven guilty of committing any crime to suffer, while the guilty roam freely, committing numerous crimes trying to prove that the innocent man committed a crime.”
