Nollywood actor and self-proclaimed cleric Yul Edochie has once again stirred debate, claiming that many Nigerian pastors are actually called to be native doctors but have abandoned their original calling due to societal stigmatization.
In a statement shared on his Instagram page, Edochie criticized the Western influence that has led many to view native doctors as evil, a perception he argues was reinforced by Nollywood.
Edochie emphasized that being a native doctor is a divine calling meant to help humanity. He stated: "Many pastors today actually have the calling to be native doctors, but they are refusing to answer the call because oyibo [Westerners] brainwashed us to believe it is evil. And Nollywood has also contributed in making native doctors look evil."
He further argued that both pastors and native doctors can choose to use their gifts for good or evil, but the core of a native doctor’s work is to fight evil and assist humanity.
"A true native doctor fights evil. Unless he decides to be evil. Same way a pastor can decide to be evil," he wrote.
What’s your take—can pastors and native doctors coexist in their roles, or is this a cultural shift too far?
