After two years behind bars, American rap icon Young Thug, born Jeffrey Williams, has been released from prison, concluding his lengthy racketeering case with a dramatic plea deal on Thursday.

The rapper, who had been incarcerated since May 2022 as part of a sweeping gang-related bust in Georgia, was originally facing a 45-year sentence recommended by prosecutors.

The case accused Young Thug of being a central figure in YSL (“Young Slime Life”), an alleged street gang, and cited violations under the RICO Act along with multiple gun and drug charges.

In a pivotal moment in court, Young Thug pled “no contest” to his RICO and gang leader charges and accepted guilty pleas for the remaining offenses.

The judge, noting his cooperation and commitment to reform, commuted his sentence to 15 years of probation with conditions instead of the heavy prison time prosecutors initially sought. Under this agreement, Thug is required to conduct anti-gang outreach presentations and complete community service annually.

The case, which rocked the music industry, saw Young Thug’s release sparking jubilation among fans and raising questions about the future of YSL and its other members. The rapper’s return to freedom marks a powerful turn in his high-profile legal saga, promising to leave a lasting impact on the genre’s legal and cultural landscape.
