South African powerhouse Tyla stole the spotlight at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, UK, taking home three major trophies. The rising star’s victory over big names marked a significant moment in Afrobeats and African music.
Tyla first clinched the Best Afrobeats Artist award, besting a competitive lineup that included Nigerian icons Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr. Her triumph continued with the Best African Act award, once again outperforming Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Tanzanian sensation Diamond Platnumz.
In a surprising turn, she claimed the Best R&B Artist category, outshining American superstars Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét, establishing herself as a dominant force in both African and global music.
The singer capped her winning night with a stunning acoustic performance of her hit Water, captivating the audience in Manchester.
Nigerian star Ayra Starr, nominated in four categories, unfortunately left without a win despite her stellar year and dedicated fanbase.
Tyla’s string of wins this year is historic. Earlier, she took home the first-ever Best African Music Performance at the Grammys and claimed Best Afrobeats Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards, setting her apart as a global representative of African music.
