American rapper J. Cole has shed light on why he decided to retract a diss track aimed at fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar. This revelation follows months of speculation about the unresolved tension between the two hip-hop heavyweights.
In his latest single, ‘Port Antonio’, Cole opened up about the controversial moment, explaining that despite being provoked by Lamar’s verse on Future and Metro Boomin's track ‘Like That’, which seemed to throw shade at him and Drake, he ultimately chose not to escalate the beef.
Cole had initially fired back at Lamar on his unreleased track ‘7 Minute Drill’, where he criticized Lamar’s career trajectory by saying he “fell off like the Simpsons.” However, in a surprising turn of events, J. Cole paused his set at the 2024 Dreamville Festival in North Carolina to publicly apologize to Lamar for nearly engaging in a feud.
In ‘Port Antonio’, Cole explains that he retracted the diss to avoid feeding into the hype, which he believed was driven by external forces wanting "blood" and clickbait to fuel their own financial gain. He reflected on how such a beef could have cost him a valuable friendship while gaining an unnecessary enemy.
J. Cole raps, “I pulled the plug because I saw where that was about to go, they wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make their pockets grow. They see the fire in my pen and think I’m dogging smoke. I wouldn’t have lost the battle, dog, I would’ve lost a bro, I would’ve gained a foe, and all for what?”
Fans have praised Cole for his maturity in avoiding a feud that could have shifted the dynamics of the rap industry, emphasizing his commitment to preserving relationships over drama.
