Nigerian Filmmaker Jade Osiberu Faces Backlash After Shifting Political Support from Tinubu to Peter Obi

Nigerian filmmaker Jade Osiberu has found herself at the center of controversy after flipping her political support from President Bola Tinubu to former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The backlash erupted when an old tweet resurfaced in which Osiberu questioned Obi’s ability to "generate wealth," contrasting her recent criticisms of President Tinubu.

On September 28, 2024, Osiberu shared a lighthearted post on X (formerly Twitter) about procrastination, sparking negative reactions from some users. One user, identified as Orji, dug up a 2022 tweet where Osiberu stated that Obi was "not a wealth multiplier." This triggered accusations of tribalism, with Orji labeling Osiberu a “tribal bigot” for her apparent change in stance.

Osiberu quickly defended herself against the criticism, addressing the tribalism accusation head-on. She argued that her detractors were selectively highlighting her past tweet on Obi, while ignoring her broader critique of the current administration.

She emphasized that disagreeing with a candidate does not make one a bigot and urged for more substantial political discussions.

Explaining her previous stance, Osiberu stated that her criticism of Obi was rooted in the belief that Nigeria needed a leader capable of economic transformation, not just one with integrity.

She also expressed frustration over the personal attacks she faced, stressing the importance of intellectual engagement in political discourse rather than resorting to insults.

The filmmaker further highlighted that she has long critiqued the political ideology of the ruling APC, revealing that her past work led to a lawsuit. She urged Nigerians to approach political discussions with rationality and civility, encouraging supporters of various candidates to engage in meaningful conversations rather than bullying those with opposing views.

This ongoing saga sheds light on the intense, often personal nature of political discourse in Nigeria, as public figures like Osiberu navigate the challenges of sharing their evolving political opinions.
