Officers from the Lagos Police Command reportedly discharged teargas and detained several youths who had gathered in Lekki on Sunday morning to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the October 20, 2020, #ENDSARS shooting at the Tollgate.
The demonstrators held placards displaying messages such as:
“Never forget,” “Four years after, no justice,” “We demand full implementation of the panel’s recommendations,” and “Oppression continues, police brutality persists.”
They pledged to commemorate the lives lost to soldiers and police at the Tollgate while advocating for a better Nigeria.
The demonstration began around 8 a.m., but armed police quickly intervened, blocking the protesters from reaching the Tollgate. Social media footage captured anti-riot police approaching the crowd and informing them that protests were not permitted in that area.
Despite this, the protesters reminded the officers that they were conducting a peaceful march to honor their fallen comrades and asserted their right to protest peacefully. Eyewitnesses reported that tensions rose as the protesters insisted on continuing their memorial march, prompting the police to deploy teargas in an attempt to disperse the gathering.
