In a suspense-filled twist, social media personality Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has sparked a fresh saga after posting a video where he donned a look-alike police uniform, declaring himself “CSP VDM of the Online Division.”
The video, aimed at rebranding himself as an “online police officer” rather than an activist, quickly caught fire, with his caption urging Nigerians to join the fight against corruption. “CSP VDM of the Online Division,” he wrote, “Shoutout to the Nigeria Police Force for their tireless efforts in fighting corruption.”

However, his stunt took a sudden turn barely 15 hours later, as the Nigeria Police Force issued a stern statement on their X page condemning the unauthorized use of police gear by content creators. They disavowed VDM’s video, declaring it a violation of Sections 251 of the Criminal Code Law and 133 of the Penal Code Law—both of which carry criminal penalties for impersonation.
“NIGERIA POLICE CONDEMNS UNLAWFUL USE OF POLICE UNIFORMS BY CONTENT CREATORS,” the statement read. “The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorized portrayal and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the Police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.”

Users flooded the comment section on the Nigeria Police X page with frustration and criticism. Here’s a sample of their reactions:
@Omolomo_o
"I tagged you in over 40 videos showing your officers brutalizing innocent people today, but this is the content you find disturbing?"
@Inno4Chi
"The main question is: Does VDM wearing a uniform resembling that of the Nigerian Police Force bring contempt or disrespect to the uniform?
As for needing permission, this seems to be a policy guideline rather than a law. The police could seek to add this requirement to the Police Act 2020 or State Criminal Codes, since you can’t criminalize an act by policy alone.
On the first issue, I’ll let the public decide."
@spoiltkid
"It’s disappointing that the Nigerian Police would focus on this with so many urgent security issues threatening lives and property.
Please, take your responsibilities seriously. Respect Nigerians and humanity. Focus on your duties and stop joking."
@ObedAsiegbu
"The police killed Igbo Jah, an entertainer, in Enugu. This is the real crime. Prosecute yourselves instead of chasing shadows. You should be grateful someone even wore your uniform in a performance. Barbarism does you no favors."
@LawrenceOkoroPG
"VDM just gave them the excuse they were waiting for.
"VDM just gave them the excuse they were waiting for.
If Bobrisky could pull off a fake 6-month jail stint, ‘godfather’ can make VDM do the real 6 months.
Welcome to Nigeria."
@Oladapomikky1
"You’re quick to respond to trivial matters but slow to address serious issues. Do you realize one of your own was killed in Enugu?"
@donpanacio
"Many content creators in Nigeria have used what looks like police uniforms in their skits, and the police said nothing—until VDM did it! Also, this isn’t even an official uniform, just a black outfit with no logo."
With police investigations underway, VDM’s bold rebranding move may have backfired, throwing him into the spotlight for reasons he may not have anticipated. As fans and followers await his next move, many are questioning whether this latest act will escalate into a legal showdown with the police.
