The Deputy Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Michael Anugwa, has publicly denied reports that he was suspended by the service following the high-profile bribery allegations surrounding crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
Anugwa, who was in charge of the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre where Bobrisky allegedly served part of his jail term, addressed the matter during a House of Representatives committee hearing on Monday, September 30, 2024.

Despite widespread reports of his suspension, Anugwa told the investigative committee that he had not received any official letter regarding the suspension. “I wasn’t served a letter,” he clarified, dismissing the suspension rumors as mere social media chatter.
The controversy erupted after a leaked audio recording, shared by social media critic VeryDarkMan, alleged that Bobrisky bribed NCoS officials with N15 million to spend his four-month jail term in a private apartment near the Lagos correctional center.
The recording further implicated singer Falz, claiming he reached out to Bobrisky to offer assistance in securing a presidential pardon through his father, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana, for an additional N10 million.

In response to the growing scandal, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had announced the suspension of both Michael Anugwa and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre, during a press briefing. However, Anugwa’s denial casts doubt on the status of his alleged suspension.
As the House of Representatives continues its investigation into the bribery scandal involving the EFCC and NCoS officials, the fallout from the case continues to grip public attention. With conflicting reports and high-profile names involved, the search for the truth behind Bobrisky's alleged preferential treatment during his sentence is far from over.
