Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has stirred conversation with bold claims about his influence in the Afrobeats genre.
During a recent appearance on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ the ‘Calm Down’ hitmaker asserted that his success has been pivotal in international award shows recognizing Afrobeats as a standalone category.
Rema, while discussing his rise to global fame, confidently stated, “I don’t want to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it, but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself.” He went on to place himself alongside industry titans Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, adding, “Respect to the OGs, but yeah, I am one of the Big 4.”
He further emphasized his influence on the genre’s global recognition, noting that major award shows, including the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), introduced an Afrobeats category after the success of his global hit ‘Calm Down Remix’ with Selena Gomez. The track's massive international reception earned Rema the inaugural Best Afrobeats Song at the VMAs last year.
Rema’s statement has sparked debate within the music community, with many praising his achievements while others questioned his self-assertion. Nonetheless, his impact on Afrobeats’ international rise remains undeniable.
