The Jamaican Court of Appeals has overturned the 2014 murder conviction of Vybz Kartel, freeing the dancehall star after a decade in prison. This decision follows a critical ruling by the UK-based Privy Council in March, which identified juror misconduct during Kartel's initial trial as a significant issue.
Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was convicted for the murder of Clive "Lizard" Williams, who was alleged to have been killed over missing guns. Despite the prosecution's case, which included a controversial text message from Kartel's phone suggesting his involvement in the murder, Williams' body was never found.
The trial, lasting over two months, was plagued by allegations of juror misconduct, including accusations of a juror offering bribes. These issues were initially dismissed by the judge, who allowed the trial to proceed. The Privy Council later deemed this misconduct substantial enough to warrant reconsideration, leading to the overturning of Kartel's conviction.
In its statement, the appeals court concluded, "The interests of justice do not require a new trial to be ordered," paving the way for Kartel's release.
