Chidimma Adetshina, a finalist in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant, has officially withdrawn from the competition, citing the safety and wellbeing of her family as the primary reason.
The withdrawal follows a wave of controversy after the South African government accused Chidimma's mother of fraud and identity theft. The allegations have sparked hostile, xenophobic attacks against the 23-year-old on social media, putting her in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Chidimma’s citizenship came under scrutiny after she was announced as a finalist in July, prompting an investigation by the Home Affairs Ministry. The investigation uncovered evidence suggesting that her mother may have stolen the identity of a South African woman after Chidimma was born.
In an emotional Instagram post, Chidimma expressed her gratitude for the support she received during her Miss South Africa journey. "After much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I," she wrote.
She also extended her best wishes to her fellow finalists, saying, "Whoever wears the crown represents us all."
