Ace Nigerian singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has made it clear that he does not consider himself an Afrobeats artist and is unbothered by the lack of credit for his contributions to the global rise of the genre.

During a recent appearance on the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by Shopsydoo, Flavour explained that his focus has always been on promoting African music as a whole, rather than aligning himself with the Afrobeats movement.

Flavour expressed that while he deserves recognition for his contributions to African music, the media's focus on Afrobeats has overshadowed other significant genres from the continent. "I don’t feel bad when I’m not given credit on the global rise of African music because what the media is talking about is Afrobeats. I’m not an Afrobeats artiste," he stated.

He further elaborated, "What I’m doing is African music. There are guys like Fally Ipupa, Diamond Platinumz who are pushing African music globally that are not Afrobeats artists. Most times, the media just talks about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, of course, you should mention my name."

Flavour, known for his mastery of high-life music, urged the media to expand its focus beyond Afrobeats and promote the rich diversity of African music genres. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of artists like himself who are driving the global appreciation of African music, even if they don't fall under the Afrobeats umbrella.
