In a scathing critique, social media commentator Martin Otse, famously known as VeryDarkMan, has lashed out at Folashade Tinubu, the daughter of President Bola Tinubu, for her recent comments urging Nigerians to give her father three years in office before evaluating his performance.
Folashade Tinubu, in her statement, called for public patience and advised against participating in the planned hunger protest scheduled from August 1 to 10. Her remarks, however, did not sit well with VeryDarkMan, who took to social media on Monday to express his strong disapproval.
VeryDarkMan accused Folashade of turning a blind eye to the severe economic hardships Nigerians are currently enduring under President Tinubu’s administration. He pointed out that the first year of Tinubu’s presidency has been marked by significant economic challenges and a steep rise in fuel prices.
“Did you realize that people would not be complaining if your father’s first year in office was not the worst in Nigeria’s presidential history?” VeryDarkMan questioned, highlighting the widespread dissatisfaction with the current government.
In his video message, VeryDarkMan urged Folashade to convey to her father the urgent need to address the economic crisis and prevent further deterioration of the situation. He drew parallels to Tinubu’s past when he opposed fuel price hikes during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, suggesting that similar protests are justified now due to the current policies.
He condemned any potential violence during the protests but emphasized the importance of standing up for economic rights. “Warn your father, tell him that Nigerians are suffering. Talk to Daddy for us. Did you warn your dad when he went to protest against Goodluck Jonathan when he raised the fuel price from N65 to N87? The only thing I won’t approve of is that the protesters are violent. Stand for your rights, Nigerians."
VeryDarkMan also underscored the dire situation with fuel availability and prices, stating, “Protest, but don’t loot. Look at the prices of things. Fuel is N700 plus, and it is still not available. See the queues in gas stations. You can’t increase the price of things, and they will still not be available.”
As the nation braces for the upcoming protests, VeryDarkMan's comments have amplified the ongoing debate about the government's handling of the economy and the growing discontent among Nigerians.
