In a groundbreaking achievement, Selena Gomez has secured her first Emmy nomination for acting, following her historic Best Actress win at the Cannes Film Festival for Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez.”
This accolade, which she shared with her co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Adriana Paz, marks a significant milestone in her illustrious career. Gomez, renowned for her role in Hulu’s hit murder-mystery series “Only Murders in the Building,” has captivated audiences with her portrayal of the dry-witted Mabel Mora, a resident of the Upper West Side’s Arconia apartment building.

Competing with Top Talent
Gomez’s nomination places her in the company of other talented actresses, including Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Maya Rudolph (“Loot”), and Kristen Wiig (“Palm Royale”).
Remarkably, Gomez is only the fourth Latina to be nominated in this category, joining the ranks of Rita Moreno for “9 to 5” in 1983, America Ferrera’s nominations for “Ugly Betty” in 2007 and 2008, and Jenna Ortega for “Wednesday” last year. Among these nominees, Ferrera is the only winner, adding a competitive edge to this year’s race.

Making History as a Producer
In addition to her acting recognition, Gomez has also made history as an executive producer for “Only Murders in the Building.” Her third consecutive nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series makes her the most-nominated Latina producer in Emmy history.
Gomez follows in the footsteps of Mexican multi-hyphenate Salma Hayek, who was nominated for ABC’s “Ugly Betty” in 2007, and Cuban producer Marlis Pujol, who received nominations for Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” in 2020 and 2021. Notably, Celia D. Costas remains the only Latina woman to have won as a producer in any top series category for “Angels in America” in 2004.

Proud Representation
As a third-generation American-Mexican, Gomez’s achievements are a breath of fresh air for Latin representation in Hollywood. She proudly embraces her heritage, with her father being Mexican and her paternal grandparents hailing from Monterrey.
In a June episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Gomez expressed her excitement about potentially setting a new record, saying, “I didn’t even know that, so these little nuggets of information keep me going. They make me proud. I’ve always been proud of my last name, heritage, and culture, but I need to stop more and realize how great this is. If it’s true, I can’t wait to tell my dad.”

Upcoming Season and Emmy Awards

The new season will follow Charles, Oliver, and Mabel as they navigate the shocking events surrounding the death of Charles’ stunt double and friend, Sazz Pataki. Additionally, the trio learns that a Hollywood studio is interested in turning their podcast into a movie, adding another layer of intrigue to the series.
The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies will take place over two nights on September 7-8, leading up to the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will air on ABC on Sunday, September 15. All eyes will be on Gomez as she continues to break barriers and make history in the entertainment industry.
