Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has addressed the root causes of the frequent deaths among Nollywood actors, attributing them to carelessness and negligence. Speaking in Lagos this week, Mama G highlighted the tendency of actors to ignore their health while engrossed in their work.
“When you are doing something you are enjoying, you wouldn’t bother to take care of your health. Once there is life in you, you keep doing what you are doing. And it’s something that pays back on your body,” she explained. “Some people are so careless that when they are sick instead of going to the hospital for a proper check-up, they prefer to visit a chemist or a pharmacy to buy a pain reliever. It’s no longer safe with me.”
Mama G's comments come in the wake of the funeral rites for the late comic actor John Okafor, known as Mr. Ibu, which took place in his hometown in Enugu State last month. She recounted her emotional reaction at the funeral, explaining that she broke down in tears when she realized Mr. Ibu was gone forever. “At that moment, I broke down in tears. It’s not because I was expecting him to respond, but it was when I realized that this man is gone forever,” she said.
She urged her colleagues in the industry to prioritize their health by going for regular medical check-ups and avoiding practices detrimental to their well-being.
Mama G also shared a personal transformation story about how an encounter with her maker changed her life and led her to become an evangelist. “It was in 2016 when God called me to work for Him. Then, I used to be a teacher in the church, but I didn’t climb the pulpit. It’s not something I can explain.”
She recounted how she initially resisted the call but eventually submitted herself to a 21-day period of separation, which extended to 30 days. “By the time I came out from those 30 days, I became a changed person,” she said, noting that this experience led to her being invited to various religious programs where she shared her testimony.
Patience Ozokwor's heartfelt message serves as a wake-up call for Nollywood actors to take their health seriously and underscores her profound spiritual journey that has inspired many.
