Nigerian Gospel singer, Victoria Orenze, has addressed the heated controversy surrounding her recent use of the phrase "Jehovah El-Steeze" to describe God. The term "Steeze," a trendy English slang meaning "swag" or "impressive style," sparked backlash from some fans and religious circles who found the description unconventional.
In a detailed post, Orenze clarified her intentions and provided biblical context to support her choice of words. She explained that "Steeze" aptly captures God's distinctive and awe-inspiring nature. "Steeze" is an English word that describes a person's impressive way of doing things or style, she noted, using it to express her reverence for God's power and majesty.
To substantiate her perspective, Orenze cited several biblical verses that similarly depict God's grandeur, such as "consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29), "wrapped in light" (Psalm 104:2), and "His voice like thunder" (Revelation 19:12). She emphasized that her description follows "understanding and revelation, not slangs or trends," urging her audience to see beyond modern language and appreciate the profound essence of God.
Orenze further elaborated that the use of certain words as slang does not alter their original meanings in English. She pointed out how phrases like "loose guard" relate to the idea of God's constant vigilance (Psalm 121:4).
Reaffirming her admiration for God's majestic nature, Orenze stated, "He is not just composure but everything else created loses their composure before Him. He is not just covered in light but He is light. Today He can ride on the cloud as His vehicle and tomorrow He is riding the wind. That's why I call Him my Jehovah El Steeze."
Her explanation aims to bridge the gap between contemporary expressions and traditional reverence, encouraging a broader understanding of divine descriptions. The passionate defense of her terminology underscores her deep respect and admiration for God's overwhelming presence and majesty.
