Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has opened up about why he shaded Wizkid while acknowledging the social media buzz surrounding Davido and Chioma's wedding.
During the high-profile wedding on June 25, Basketmouth humorously lamented the difficulty of promoting his Canadian tour due to the overwhelming attention on Davido and Chioma's nuptials. He added that even Wizkid's social media drama failed to capture much attention because everyone was focused on the wedding.
This comment did not sit well with Wizkid's fans, who threatened to "cancel" Basketmouth.
In a recent interview on "Backstage Banter with Isi Ijewere" during the Toronto stop of his Canadian tour, Basketmouth explained that his remark about Wizkid was purely a "marketing technique."
"Wizkid is my guy…that was a marketing technique," he said. "But I knew it was going to be edgy. I knew it was going to hit people. I knew they were going to get upset and they did exactly what I wanted them to do. It worked."
Basketmouth's candid explanation sheds light on the strategic thinking behind his controversial comment, revealing it was a calculated move to draw attention and stir conversation around his tour.
