The Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Shaibu Husseini, has clarified recent reports suggesting that the federal government banned smoking and ritual scenes in Nigerian movies. Contrary to the widespread reports, Husseini emphasized that there was no outright ban on such content.
During a national stakeholders’ engagement in Enugu, it was widely misreported that Husseini had declared a ban on money rituals, smoking, and the promotion of crimes in Nigerian films. However, addressing the controversies generated by these reports, Husseini explained that the term "ban" was never used.
In an interview with the DAILY POST, Husseini clarified, “Nobody banned smoking, ritual scenes in movies. There was no time when we even used the word ban. We only said that every promotion of it or the graphical depiction of those things will be restricted by giving them a classification that will make sure that young people do not watch it.”
He further elaborated on the new board regulation for 2024, which aims to prohibit the glamorization and promotion of tobacco, ritual killing, and money rituals in movies, skits, and musical videos in Nigeria. This initiative is driven by concerns that some tobacco companies, banned from advertising on television and other media, have begun using films as a means to promote tobacco.
“All we are asking for is some form of responsibility for the sake of our young people who would think that these contents are as real as they were portrayed,” Husseini stated. He acknowledged that while acting is make-believe and filmmaking reflects society, it is essential to ensure a healthy screen environment.
He emphasized the goal of creating content that families can watch together without encountering harmful elements. “We know that acting is make-belief. We know that filmmaking is the reflection of society. So it’s basically about us having a healthy screen. A screen that a father, a mother, and the children can sit down and watch without skipping because of the harmful contents,” he said.
Husseini’s clarification seeks to dispel misunderstandings and underline the NFVCB's commitment to fostering responsible and family-friendly content in Nigerian entertainment.
