Nigerian singer D'banj has publicly expressed his admiration for his controversial colleague, Portable. The 'Oliver Twist' hitmaker revealed in a recent interview with The Beat FM, Lagos, that he wishes he could be more like Portable, emphasizing that they share a common trait.
D'banj, also known as the Koko Master, reminisced about his early days in the music industry, drawing parallels between his former spontaneous style and Portable's current approach. He highlighted the spontaneity and passion that Portable brings to his craft, something D'banj himself was known for during his rise to fame.
"I wish I could be like Portable because he is doing the way I used to do … You feel something in the night, you call Don Jazzy. You drop it in the morning," D'banj explained. He fondly recalled the times when he and his former collaborator, Don Jazzy, would quickly act on inspiration without waiting for the perfect timing or playlist schedules.
D'banj continued, "Remember the way we dey do that time. But now dem dey tell us say make we wait for two or three weeks and put it on playlist. Forget that. I think everybody needs a pinch of Portable in them. I think that is what he reminds me of; for you to take everything as an opportunity. They said for you to make it in life you’ve to be lucky. Luck is opportunity finding talent. That’s what we are."
He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities and staying true to one's instincts, traits that Portable embodies and which D'banj believes are crucial for success. Portable's raw, unfiltered approach to music and life has clearly struck a chord with D'banj, reminding him of his own journey and the importance of spontaneity and seizing the moment.
