Popular American singer and actress Chloe Bailey has recently spoken out about the pervasive racism in the music industry. The 25-year-old artist lamented that Black musicians are often boxed into specific genres, while their White counterparts are more readily categorized as mainstream pop stars.
In her cover story with Nylon, Chloe expressed her frustration, stating that her music is often labeled as R&B solely because she is a Black woman. She argued that if a White artist made the same type of music, it would likely be classified as pop.
“Any music I do will easily and quickly be categorized as R&B because I’m a Black woman. If someone who didn’t have my skin tone made the same music, it would be in the pop categories. That’s just the way it’s always been in life,” Chloe lamented.
She further emphasized that music should transcend racial and genre boundaries, stating, “Music has no race, it has no genre, it has none of that. It’s just a feeling and it’s a vibration.”
Chloe's comments have sparked discussions about the racial biases that persist in the music industry, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and equitable approach to categorizing and appreciating music.
