South African TV company MultiChoice, the owner of DStv and GOtv, has been forced to revert to its previous subscription prices following a court order. This decision comes amid reports that the company has lost over 1.2 million customers in Nigeria due to a recent price increase.
Background
MultiChoice had implemented a price hike to align with market realities, citing high inflation in Nigeria and the devaluation of the naira. However, the court ruled that the price increase was unjustified, mandating the company to revert to the old prices and offer customers one free month of subscription.
Old Subscription Prices Restored
The DStv old subscription prices are as follows:
- DStv Premium: N29,500 (down from N37,000)
- DStv Compact+: N19,800 (down from N25,000)
- DStv Compact: N12,500 (down from N15,700)
- DStv Confam: N7,400 (down from N9,300)
- DStv Yanga: N4,200 (down from N5,100)
- DStv Padi: N2,950 (down from N3,600)
GOtv subscribers will also see reductions:
- GOtv Super+: N12,500 (down from N15,700)
- GOtv Super: N7,600 (down from N9,600)
- GOtv Max: N5,700
- GOtv Joli: N3,950
- GOtv Jinja: N2,700 (down from N3,300)
Current Situation
While the price reductions have been mandated, they have yet to reflect for all users. Additionally, it remains unclear if MultiChoice will comply with the court's order to offer a month-free subscription to customers.
Company's Response
MultiChoice has expressed its intention to challenge the court order, arguing that it does not align with their business model. The company is reportedly taking steps to address the ruling, although the specific actions they plan to take have not been detailed.
Customer Reactions
The reversal of the price hike and the court order for a free month of subscription have sparked mixed reactions among customers. Many have welcomed the reduced prices, especially in light of the economic challenges in Nigeria. However, the delay in reflecting the new prices has caused some frustration.
This development underscores the ongoing tension between service providers and regulatory authorities, highlighting the challenges businesses face in balancing profitability with customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance.
