Popular Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has shared candid memories of the challenges she faced when she returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom to pursue her musical career. In a recent interview with BET, the 'Koroba' hitmaker recounted how her outfit choices and music videos were initially deemed too risqué for the Nigerian audience.

"When I first moved back, I would turn up at a show and they would say I can’t perform because my outfit was too risqué," Savage revealed. The cultural norms in Nigeria at the time clashed with her more liberal style, leading to significant pushback. "It was a cultural issue. Even some of my first music videos were not played on the television because they were considered indecent. I wasn’t even wearing bikinis," she explained.

Despite these early setbacks, Tiwa Savage's determination never wavered. She continued to push boundaries with her fashion choices, even as she faced criticism. "Despite the setbacks, I was still stubborn. My dresses were getting more revealing. It was just getting worse. They were bashing me online," she admitted.

However, Savage's boldness began to pay off. While she faced online backlash, she noticed a growing appreciation for her style among female fans. "It was funny because the females were secretly falling in love with me and my style. They couldn’t deny it," she noted. "My fanbase, my followers, was growing. So they had to put me on shows and play my music because there was a demand for it."

Tiwa Savage's experience highlights the cultural tensions she navigated in her journey to stardom. Her perseverance not only helped her overcome initial resistance but also paved the way for a more diverse representation of styles in Nigerian music.
