In a recent virtual interview on the ‘Mic On’ podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, founder and senior pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Sam Adeyemi, detailed the compelling reasons behind his relocation to the United States.

The interview, which explored themes of leadership beyond governance and the role of Nigeria's younger generation, was streamed on the Mic On YouTube channel and has since garnered significant attention.

Earlier this year, Adeyemi emphasized the necessity for Nigeria’s older generations, including political and religious leaders, to correct their ways and work towards national progress. He warned that the younger generation would soon begin demanding accountability and tangible results.

During the podcast, Adeyemi cited three main catalysts for his decision to relocate: the COVID-19 pandemic, the EndSARS protests, and a series of disturbing dreams about Nigeria. He revealed that the global pandemic initially prompted him and his family to stay in the US, where all their children were based.

“When COVID-19 started, all our children were in the US, so everyone stayed with their families. We stayed with our children. The week services resumed was when EndSARS started, so we were preparing to return to Nigeria," he explained. However, the violent aftermath of the EndSARS protests led them to delay their return.

A particularly troubling experience came in the form of prophetic dreams. Adeyemi recounted, “My wife had a dream in which she traveled to Nigeria and returned to the US, which was a bad dream. I told her I wouldn’t say I liked this dream. Three days later, I had a dream. We both traveled to Nigeria in my dream, and I was in a big fight. I was being attacked violently, and I had to ask the Holy Spirit in my heart what to do. He said I should call the name of Jesus Christ. I shouted ‘in the name of Jesus Christ’ in the dream and didn’t realize I shouted out loud in real life.”

These dreams, along with similar warnings from family members, convinced Adeyemi to reconsider their immediate return to Nigeria. “We decided to take it seriously, especially considering a dream we had three days earlier. We prayed fervently, sensing danger,” he added.

Despite initial hesitations, Adeyemi and his wife remained in the US. Their stay extended for a year, which was a challenging period for Adeyemi, who had been away from Nigeria for only short periods previously. The church's leadership was supportive, agreeing to maintain operations in his absence.

“The leaders said, ‘You’ve never deceived us before. If God asks you to stay, stay as long as He directs. We’ll continue this journey,’” Adeyemi recalled.

After almost three years in the US, Adeyemi received what he described as the Holy Spirit’s clearance to return to Nigeria. However, this period also shifted his focus from solely pastoring a local church to embracing a global mission.

“But what eventually the Holy Spirit would tell me was that he wanted me to shift my focus from just being the pastor of a local church to that global walk that I had known that I would do. So right now, the focus shift is to do that global walk while we keep Daystar running, leveraging technology,” he explained.

Daystar Christian Centre, founded in 1995 and headquartered in Lagos, now boasts branches across various Nigerian states, reflecting Adeyemi's commitment to building resilient systems and investing in leadership training. This strategic focus ensured the church's stability and growth even during his extended absence.
