It is no longer news that the Nigerian government is reverting back to the old National Anthem. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has now officially approved this anthem as the national anthem.
This decision has been a hot topic throughout the week, with celebrities and Nigerians voicing their criticism of the move.
Furthermore, the Federal Government has directed all parastatals to learn the anthem. This post will help you get acquainted with the old national anthem that is now new. Below are the lyrics of the anthem for your learning.
After gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria adopted its first National Anthem, created by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate living in the country. Below is the lyrics as written by Lilian.
Nigerian National Anthem
Stanza 1
Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood, we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland
Stanza 2
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
Stanza 3
O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
