Maverick singer Charly Boy has made headlines by urging Nigerians not to take Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka seriously, citing concerns about age-related brain deterioration. In a candid post on his Instagram page, Charly Boy, 73, expressed his views on the recent actions and statements of the renowned playwright and poet, who is approaching his 90th birthday.
Charly Boy suggested that Soyinka's advanced age could be contributing to a decline in his cognitive abilities, which might explain his recent rhetoric and behavior. He emphasized that it is not unusual for individuals of Soyinka's age to experience some level of brain deterioration.
"Prof. Wole Soyinka is aged over 80 years, even tending towards 90 years. For his age, some level of brain deterioration is not unexpected. His rhetoric and actions in recent times are suggestive of deteriorating brain disease, and as such, he shouldn’t be taken too seriously," Charly Boy wrote.
He further highlighted a concerning issue, stating that Nigerians should be more worried about how Soyinka's family and close friends have not been able to protect him from being exploited by opportunistic politicians. According to Charly Boy, these politicians are taking advantage of Soyinka's medical situation for their own gain, tarnishing the once-respected Nobel laureate's reputation in the process.
"What we should be worried about as well-meaning Nigerians is how his family and close friends can’t ward off agents of desperate politicians who are bent on exploiting his medical situation to their advantage, no matter how low it sinks the once respected Nobel laureate," Charly Boy added.
Charly Boy's remarks have sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many debating the appropriateness of his comments and the implications for Soyinka's legacy.
