Biopic of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Set to Hit Cinemas on May 17th [Video]

The biographical film "Funmilayo Ransome Kuti," directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, is set to hit cinemas on May 17th. The film chronicles the life of the late Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, a prominent Nigerian educator, political activist, women's rights advocate, and the mother of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

The movie delves into her experiences at Abeokuta Grammar School, her marriage to Isreal Ransome-Kuti, and her groundbreaking efforts against colonialism and patriarchy through the establishment of the Abeokuta Women's Union.

Penned by Tunde Babalola, the film features a star-studded cast including Kehinde Bankole, Ajoke Silva, Adunni Ade, Adebayo Salami, Omowunmi Dada, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule, Ibrahim Suleiman, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, Yewande Osamein, and Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko.

Special appearances in the film include her grandchildren, such as Femi Kuti and Yeni Kuti, with Yeni portraying her aunt Dolupo. Dotun Ransome Kuti takes on the role of his father Olikoye, while Kunle Ransome-Kuti portrays his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Additionally, great-grandson Made Kuti makes an appearance.

"Funmilayo Ransome Kuti" was selected for screening at the 12th Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF 2023) and has received nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Writing Movie at the upcoming Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
