Anambra Boat Mishap Update: NIWA Recovers Two Bodies, Three Still Missing

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has provided an update on the boat mishap that claimed the life of Nollywood actor John Paul Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope. NIWA disclosed that there were 12 people aboard the boat at the time of the incident.

According to NIWA, seven people were rescued, two were found dead, and three individuals are still missing. The mishap occurred in the outskirts of Onitsha, specifically in the Akpaka Area and Nsugbe of Anambra East local government area. This location is contrary to initial reports that suggested the incident happened in Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area.

Area Manager of NIWA, Suleiman Nicholas, stated that their personnel, along with members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and the Marine Police, are conducting rescue and recovery operations at the scene of the accident.

He said: “Whatever you will get now as the cause of the incident may not be accurate, we are waiting for the report from my men who are at the scene of the incident, my men are on the water now to recover the remaining three missing victims.”


One whether actor Junior Pope was one of the dead victims, the NIWA Area Manager said: “My people said Junior Pope was one of the dead.”
