Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Tems, opened up about her childhood experiences with bullying and self-consciousness in an interview with The Cut. She revealed that she did not start speaking until the age of three and shared that she faced bullying due to the pitch of her voice.
Tems expressed how her unique voice set her apart from other girls, leading to self-conscious feelings. Despite the challenges she encountered, the singer has since risen to prominence and gained global recognition for her distinctive voice and musical talent. Her openness about overcoming childhood difficulties adds another layer to her journey and showcases her resilience in pursuing her passion for music.
“I was bullied to the point of tears and was a target of ridicule. This led to the belief that I sounded like a boy, or a frog, with the impression that my voice was ugly.“I was always in my own little world. When I did make friends, I would try to make them sing my songs and other girls had these sweet, high voices and my voice had a bass.”
Recall that the songstress had previously stated that she started making music because she doesn’t have friends.
