Review of Harman Kardon Go + Play 3: Impeccable sound quality, lacking app functionality

Review of Harman Kardon Go + Play 3: Impeccable sound quality, lacking app functionality

As autumn settles in the Northern Hemisphere, outdoor activities and relaxation may feel like a distant memory. However, Harman Kardon's latest portable Bluetooth speaker, the Go + Play 3, has generated a lot of excitement in the market. Despite less than ideal testing conditions, Andreas Bergsman decided to give it a try.

Seven years ago, He said, he had the opportunity to test the predecessor of the Go + Play 3, the Go + Play. "It left a positive impression on me, so I had high hopes for its successor".

Design and Build:
When it comes to size and design, there haven't been many significant changes. However, there have been some refinements made to the top of the Go + Play 3. It now boasts a mirror-like surface, unlike the slightly inwardly sloping appearance of the Go + Play. Additionally, the aluminum handle of the Go + Play 3 extends down the sides of the speaker, adding a sleek touch.

Apart from these updates, most of the design elements remain unchanged. That is, until you flip the speaker over and notice the newly exposed downward-facing sub-bass driver.

The previous model's speaker parts include two 90mm bass drivers, two 20mm tweeters, and a power output of 4 x 25 watts. On the other hand, the Go + Play 3 features two 70mm mid-range drivers, two 20mm tweeters, a passive radiator, and the mentioned 130mm subwoofer. Additionally, the Go + Play 3 is slightly heavier, weighing 10.4 pounds compared to the original Go + Play's 7.5 pounds.

Controls & Features:

The functionality of the Go + Play 3 remains largely unchanged. However, there are still some limitations when it comes to wireless communication, as it is only available through Bluetooth. This means that the range is limited, and playback is interrupted during phone calls.

Although the Go + Play 3 has two built-in microphones that allow it to be used during calls, the sound quality may not be impressive, especially for the person on the other end of the call. On the top of the device, you will find a few controls: a power button, a Bluetooth search activation button (which allows for connection with two devices), volume controls, and a multifunction button.

The multifunction button can be used to answer and end calls, as well as skip music tracks (two presses for forward, three for backward). These controls are simple and intuitive.

Lack of customization options

The review highlights the absence of customization options in the Go + Play 3 system. Instead of being able to manually adjust the audio, the system automatically adapts to the surroundings and optimizes the sound in real time.

However, the author expresses a preference for the ability to experiment and fine-tune the sound experience.

Typically, users would make such audio tweaks in an associated app, but since there is no app specifically for the Go + Play 3, any adjustments must be made within the streaming service app.

Audio performance:

The audio performance of the Go + Play 3 is impressive. It excels in reproducing bass, which is often a challenge for portable Bluetooth speakers. The speaker also performs well across the entire range and creates a strong presence with a wide sweet spot.

In addition to the above, it is possible to pair two Go + Play 3 units for a true stereo experience. However, it is worth noting that the speaker does not have an IP classification, so its protection against moisture is uncertain. This may make using the Go + Play 3 outdoors a bit risky.

Andreas Bergsman(techhive) Verdict

The Harman Kardon Go + Play 3 is an elegant, robust, and great-sounding portable Bluetooth speaker. The sound is flawless, with rumbling bass and an accurate midrange. However, the fact that such an expensive and recently launched speaker lacks IP classification, Wi-Fi connection, and an associated app for various settings and services is obviously a minus.
