Egina Hall of Fame, now trending on Showmax(Comedy legend shines in 8 must-watch shows and movies)

Regina Hall's breakthrough into the world of cinema occurred with her debut film role as Candy in the immensely popular 1999 comedy, The Best Man. Her career continues to flourish, as evidenced by the recent release of the highly anticipated sequel series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

Adamma Ebo, a renowned comedian, had a clear vision when she penned her movie Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. She had a specific idea in mind for the character of the pastor's wife, whom she referred to as a "Regina Hall" type. Ebo sought someone who embodied elegance while embracing their eccentric side. The ideal candidate had to be funny yet authentic, assertive yet capable of being lighthearted.

To understand why Ebo choose Regina Hall as her inspiration, take a look at some of the iconic roles that have solidified Hall's status in our Regina Hall of fame.

1. Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul

Adamma was fortunate as Regina decided to take on the lead role in the film Honk for Jesus. This mockumentary, created by Adamma and executive producers Daniel Kaluuya and Jordan Peele, who previously collaborated on Get Out and Nope, revolves around the story of Lee-Curtis Childs, a prominent Southern Baptist megachurch pastor (played by Sterling K Brown, known for his role as Randall Pearson in This Is Us), and his wife Trinitie.

The couple's reputation takes a hit when a scandal causes their congregation to abandon them. Now, a documentary crew is documenting their journey to regain the trust and support of their followers.

Trinitie strives to portray herself as the epitome of an exemplary wife in a flawless marriage. However, Lee-Curtis consistently undermines her efforts by showcasing his own self-importance. One particularly egregious example is when he instructs Regina to prance around in white-face clown makeup.

The couple's insatiable greed and vanity are evident through their possession of opulent gold thrones and extravagant walk-in wardrobes, did not help matters.

Regina skillfully utilizes Trinitie's blend of self-absorption and camera-consciousness to create hilarious moments in the show. However, she also taps into Trinitie's deep emotional turmoil, portraying her heartbreak, betrayal, and anguish with great authenticity.

Whether dressed in her elegant Sunday Best or her seemingly casual yet stylish assortment of Prada suits for everyday attire, Regina always manages to look impeccable on screen.

This is all thanks to the talented head of wardrobe, Lorraine Coppin, who previously worked wonders with the wardrobe of the cast in the popular megachurch drama series, Greenleaf.

2. The Best Man: The Final Chapters

Regina had her debut in the film industry with the role of Candace "Candy" Sparks in the 1999 movie Best Man. In the film, Candy is a stripper who unexpectedly falls in love with Murch, a character played by Harold Perrineau, during a bachelor party for Lance and Mia's wedding, portrayed by Morris Chestnut and Monica Calhoun respectively. It was quite an interesting way to start her career!

Interestingly, Regina later shared that she had no clue about what to do during her audition for the role. In a bold move, she decided to slap her bottom in a provocative manner. When the casting directors asked if she could do anything else, she simply said thank you and left. It was a risky move, but it paid off for her.

Candace's relationship with Murch creates tension with his tumultuous ex-girlfriend, Shelby, played by Melissa De Sousa. This leads to Regina's first-ever on-screen "cat fight" scene with Melissa, adding another exciting element to her debut performance.

3. Girls Trip

In the world of acting, it takes a certain level of energy and confidence to share the screen with powerhouse actresses like Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish. However, Malcolm D Lee, the creator of Best Man, had no doubt that Regina had what it takes to shine as the leading lady instead of playing the sidekick. This is evident in a scene where she hilariously mistakes a lit candle for a shot of alcohol during a wild afterparty.

Regina stars in a hilarious buddy comedy film where she portrays lifestyle guru Ryan Pierce, also known as "the next Oprah." Ryan invites her closest friends to join her on a road trip to New Orleans, where she is set to deliver the keynote speech at the Essence Festival. Regina's performance not only showcases her comedic talent but also brings a relatable and human side to Ryan's character. Whether she is using her success to mask her failing marriage, being the supportive sister we all wish we had, or opening up to a room full of ambitious women about the falsehood in her book's title, "You CAN Have It All," Regina's portrayal of Ryan makes us eager to spend time with her, even during her less-than-pleasant moments.

4. BarberShop: The Next Cut

Regina joins the cast of the Barbershop comedy movie series, portraying the character Angie. She plays a witty and quick-tongued stylist who teams up with her business partner Calvin (played by the equally hilarious Ice Cube, known for his role in the Friday movies) to lead the newly established women's section of the barbershop. Alongside her is a talented staff that includes Nicki Minaj. With the removal of the dividing wall between the two salons, the discussions, playful exchanges, and impromptu dance sessions reach an entirely new level of entertainment.

Despite the Barbershop's reputation as a neutral territory, gang violence continues to plague Chicago. Calvin, the owner, is faced with a dilemma as his son Jalen becomes enticed by the allure of the thug life. Following a tragic event, Calvin contemplates selling the business and relocating to the North. However, Angie steps in as the voice of reason, highlighting the detrimental impact losing the Barbershop would have on their community's chances of survival.

Regina, with her sharp wit and impeccable timing, adds a refreshing touch to Barbershop. Whether she's flawlessly styling hair or challenging outdated beliefs about women's desires, she never fails to make an impact.

5. Little

The movie tells the story of Jordan Sanders, a pushy and aggressive tech mogul who is cursed to wake up in her 13-year-old body. As she goes back to school to learn some important lessons, her assistant April is left in charge at work. This gives April the opportunity to confront Jordan about her terrible behavior. At the same time, Jordan gets a chance to reconnect with her younger self and escape the constant struggle she faces as a Black woman in the tech industry.

Putting aside any seriousness, the movie is definitely worth watching if only to witness the impressive sight of 13-year-old Jordan effortlessly ruling over the geeky table during school lunch, all while dressed in her trendy office lady attire.

Above all, it is a treat to see Marsai's remarkable portrayal of Regina, which she pitched to Kenya Barris, the creator of Black-ish, when she was just 10 years old. It is no surprise that Regina was the perfect choice, having previously collaborated with Kenya and Tracy Oliver, another writer for Little, on Barbershop: The Next Cut and Girls Trip.
