Nigerian artist Oladokun Abimbola Elijah, popularly known as Bayanni, has voiced his dissent regarding the victory of Argentine football icon Lionel Messi in the 2023 men's Ballon d'Or. Bayanni firmly asserted that Messi was not deserving of the prestigious award, contending that it could have been awarded to someone else.
Notably, Messi secured his record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or win, surpassing competitors such as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. In a recent interview with Cool FM Nigeria, Lagos, Bayanni expressed his viewpoint that Messi's performance did not justify the honor. He further argued that past World Cup winners did not always receive the Ballon d'Or, indicating a difference in his perspective.
He said, “Based on what I’ve been hearing from people, Messi won the Ballon d’Or because he won the World Cup. But many people collected World Cup trophies in the past and they didn’t win the Ballon d’Or.
“What I’m saying is that it should have been Haaland or somebody else but not Messi.”
