Grok: Elon Musk's New AI from xAI to rival ChatGPT, other

Elon Musk's new AI company, xAI, has unveiled its first technology called "Grok." Grok is designed to answer questions and provide information in a witty and sometimes rebellious manner. It's positioned as an AI that won't shy away from answering "spicy questions" and aims to provide a unique and candid interaction.

Grok has access to data from xAI, which gives it a competitive edge in terms of providing up-to-date information. Musk shared a side-by-side comparison showing Grok's response versus another AI bot, highlighting Grok's ability to provide more current information.

The AI prototype is in its early beta phase, with two months of training. It is currently available to a select number of users for testing, and others can sign up for a waitlist. Ultimately, Grok is expected to become a feature of xAI's premium subscription service, X Premium+.

The company positions Grok as a challenger to existing AI models and claims that, in some respects, it is the best AI in its class. However, xAI acknowledges that like other Large Language Models, Grok can still generate false or contradictory information.

The name "Grok" is derived from Robert A. Heinlein's 1961 science fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land." In the book, "grok" is a Martian term that conveys a deep understanding and empathy with something.

xAI, launched in July, has a team of former employees from companies like OpenAI and DeepMind. Its mission is to build AI that advances collective understanding and is free from political biases. Grok is seen as a way to test this AI approach publicly.
