Junta Chief appoints Malian Afropop singer Salif Keita as advisor

Salif Keita, the renowned Afropop artist from Mali, known as the 'Golden Voice of Africa', has been given a significant role as a special advisor to the leader of Mali's military junta. This appointment was made official through a decree signed by Colonel Assimi Goita, the military leader who took control after the removal of the country's elected president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, in 2020.

In a recent decree dated August 11 and published on August 14, 2023, the transitional president appointed five individuals as special advisors, with Salif Keita being one of them. This move highlights the recognition of Keita's expertise and influence, as he will now contribute his valuable insights and guidance to the leadership of Mali during this transitional period.

In addition to Salif Keita, the other special advisors appointed by the transitional president are former Prime Minister Modibo Keita, former Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs Tiéman Hubert Coulibaly, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdoulaye Diop, and former Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization Mohamed Ag Erlaf.

However, the recent decree does not provide any specific information regarding the singer's new position or responsibilities within the government. It is worth noting that Salif Keita, who is 73 years old, has consistently shown his support for the junta, aligning himself with their narrative of national sovereignty and advocating for the withdrawal of UN peacekeeping forces from Mali.

Just a few days ago, Keita had submitted a letter of resignation from an assembly established by the military, which currently holds power in the country. Although he did not provide any explanation for his decision to resign, he emphasized his unwavering loyalty to the junta.

In his words; “the undisputed friend of my country’s soldiers.”
