Raymond Dokpesi, AIT chairman's burial(PHOTOS)




Chief Raymond Dokpesi was a renowned media mogul and founder of Daar Communications, a media company that owns several television and radio stations in Nigeria. 


He was born on October 25, 1951, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He attended Loyola College, Ibadan, and later proceeded to the University of Benin, where he obtained a degree in microbiology.






After his university education, Dokpesi worked briefly as a teacher before venturing into business. He started his media career in 1984 when he founded Daar Communications. 


The company's first television station, African Independent Television (AIT), was launched in 1994. Since then, the company has grown to become one of the leading media organizations in Nigeria.








Dokpesi was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He contested for the position of national chairman of the party in 2017 but lost to Uche Secondus. 


He was also a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue, which was set up by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013.






Dokpesi's death on May 29, 2022, was a great loss to the media industry and the country at large. He was a visionary leader who contributed immensely to the development of the media industry in Nigeria. 


His final burial ceremony in Agenebode, Edo State, was attended by many dignitaries, including politicians, business leaders, and media personalities.





In his tribute to Dokpesi, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State described him as a "media icon and a great Nigerian." He said that Dokpesi's contributions to the media industry in Nigeria would always be remembered. 


The deputy governor of Edo State, Shuaibu Phillips, also paid tribute to Dokpesi, describing him as a "patriotic Nigerian who worked tirelessly for the development of the country."





Dokpesi's legacy will continue to live on through his media empire, which has become a household name in Nigeria. 


His vision and passion for the media industry will inspire generations of media professionals in Nigeria and beyond.
