In a recent move to reform the aviation sector, President Bola Tinubu has renamed several federal airports after prominent Nigerians. The announcement was made in a memo released by the Federal Ministry of Aviation on June 1, 2023, and signed by Mrs Joke Olatunji for the Director of Airport Operations.
As part of the renaming, the Maiduguri Airport has been named after the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, while the Port Harcourt Airport has been named after the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo. Additionally, the Nasarawa Airport has been renamed in honor of the late founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, Usman Dan Fodio.
This move is expected to honor the legacies of these prominent Nigerians and contribute to the development of the aviation sector in the country.
