The U-17 AFCON has started, and the Golden Eaglets did not disappoint their fans as they triumphed over Zambia. Favour Daniel scored the decisive goal to get the 2023 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations to a good start.
The Golden Eaglets started the game on a strong footing but were frustrated by some impressive goalkeeping by Shedrack Kalyati.
Nduka Ugbade’s side had the ball in the net early in the game but it was ruled out for offside.
The Zambians were nervous in the opening exchanges but later got into their groove and created several half-chances.
The first half failed to produce a goal despite the Golden Eaglets’ dominance.
Zambia head coach, Ian Bakala made two changes early in the second half with Junior Stanley Nyamikwe and Charles Kampamba replacing Jonathan Kalimina and Chimuka Lweendo.
Despite the double substitution, the Golden Eaglets continued their dominance.
The breakthrough came 14 minutes from time when Daniel pounced on a loose ball to fire home the winning goal.
Substitute Light Eke missed the chance to double Nigeria’s lead after he missed from the spot in stoppage time.
The Eaglets will face Morocco in their next game in the competition at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui on Wednesday.
