It is official, James Cameron is the first director in history to have three films gross $2 billion at the global box office.
His latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, passed the massive milestone over the weekend, making it his third film to reach such heights.
It is only the sixth film in history to reach the $2 billion mark, and Cameron, 68, will now lay claim to three of the four most successful films of all time.
In November last year, the Canadian veteran filmmaker confessed that The Way of Water would need to become the third or fourth highest in order to turn a profit.
He told studio bosses: ‘You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break-even.’
As reported by Variety, the director, who also helmed the first two Terminator films and 1986’s Aliens, said The Way of Water’s budget was ‘very expensive.’
His first movie to pass $2 billion was 1997’s Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, the highest-grossing film of all time for 12 years.
The epic romantic drama was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning 11 of them, and praised for its design, special effects, and storytelling.
It was overtaken by Cameron’s next project, Avatar, in 2009, reaching a gross total of $2.9 billion worldwide and still the highest-grossing film of all time.
At the time, its motion capture technology was brand new and considered by many to be revolutionary for the world of cinema.
The other films to pass $2 billion worldwide are Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
For a brief period between July 2019 and March 2021, Endgame replaced Avatar as the most successful film of all time, only for an Avatar re-released to send it back to the top.
Adjusted for inflation, the list of most successful films of all time also includes 1939’s Gone With the Wind, which grossed a total of $3.9 billion worldwide in today’s money.
In addition, 1956’s The Ten Commandments, 1965’s The Sound of Music and Dr. Zhivago, 1977’s Star Wars, and 1982’s E.T. complete the inflation-adjusted top 10.
