FIFA World Cup results 2022: day six and later

We are six days down and 22 days to go in the 2022 World Cup, and things have started taking shape.

Yesterday, soccer fans saw the commencement of the second round of group matches as the hosts Qatar, desperate to avoid the ignominy of an early elimination on home soil, while another match-up will see whose English is correct as England faces the USA.

There are some crucial matches today, too, with the likes of Australia and Argentina (yes, Argentina!) needing to win to stave off elimination.
Australia could have a difficult time against a Tunisia side that impressed in their opening draw with Denmark, while Argentina will be expected to respond strongly to the stunning upset against Saudi Arabia when they face Mexico.

Defending champions France could secure their qualification with a win in their match against Denmark, while the Saudis will be looking to repeat their heroic performance against Lionel Messi and Co. when they take on Poland. A win could see them qualify for the knockout stages for the first time since 1994.

Qatar did all it could but was ultimately unsuccessful in its attempt to stave off elimination. After losing the opening match, which was the first time a host nation would be losing their opener, they did poorly in their second than the first. Though they scored their first-ever World Cup goal, it amounted to nothing as Senegal shoved them aside to end the match 3-1. With that loss, Qatar stood as the second host nation to go out in the group stages after South Africa in 2010.

Earlier, Iran scored two late goals to defeat Wales in a dramatic encounter that saw the tournament's first red card as Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey received a straight red card for a shocking challenge.

The Netherlands and Ecuador then played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw, which means both sides will fancy their chances of doing enough in the final group matches to guarantee their passage to the Round of 16, though Ecuador will be happier with Friday's result.

And in the marquee match of the day, a disciplined defensive performance from the USA ensured that a star-studded England attack were thwarted and had to settle for a frustrating 1-1 draw, with some England fans not happy with the tactics employed by manager Gareth Southgate.

2022 World Cup matches tomorrow

The second set of group games continues, with a heavyweight clash set to dominate everyone's attention.

The late game between Group E giants Spain and Germany is one of the most exciting of the group stage, with Germany still reeling from their shock loss to Japan and Spain looking confident after smashing Costa Rica 7-0.

Earlier, Japan looks to secure their qualification to the knockout stages against Costa Rica before Belgium looks to do the same when they face a tricky Morocco side in Group F.

Canada will aim to build on the positive momentum built in their first game against Belgium, where they were narrowly defeated, but they know they will need to be better at taking their chances, as a strong Croatia side could punish and eliminate them if Les Rouges do not fire in front of goal.
