Nigerian football fans will not forget Sunday afternoon in a hurry as the Flamingos finished third at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. They defeated Germany 3-2 on penalties in their third-place encounter in Mumbai.

The Flamingos surrendered a 3-0 lead in the game, with penalties needed to determine the winners. This victory is Nigeria’s best finish in the history of the competition.

Germany’s lead in the seventh minute was cancelled following a foul on goalkeeper Faith Omilana.

Opeyemi Ajakaye opened scoring for Nigeria 20 minutes into the encounter with a fantastic finish. The 16-year-old, who has been brilliant throughout the competition, recorded her first goal.

Two minutes later, Aminat Bello almost doubled Nigeria’s lead, but her effort narrowly missed the target. The Flamingos maintained dominance throughout the first half but could not add to their lead.

After the break, Aminat Bello got on the scoresheet, doubling the Flamingos’ lead three minutes into the half with a brilliant header. Etim Edidiong came in as a super-sub, adding the third goal for the Flamingos in the 63rd minute.

The German girls started their comeback through Hella Viet 17 minutes from time. With the goal at hand, the Germans piled pressure on the Flamingos afterwards but could not find a way back.

Paulina Bartz further reduced the deficit with another goal in the 84th minute before Loreen Bender levelled scores for Germany on the dot of 90 minutes.

The match went into penalties to decide the winner. The Flamingos prevailed in the shootout, winning 3-2 to clutch the third-place trophy for the first time in the competition’s history.
