Serena Williams is back on winning ways, and she showed it at the ongoing US Open. Serena Williams zoomed into the third round of the US Open on Wednesday, destroying second seed Anett Kontaveit. She dramatically extended her Grand Slam singles career with that fantastic performance.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion at 40 revealed her plans to retire after the tournament but did not want to leave without stamping her name in the sports world. She put up a great show and fighting spirit to wrestle Kontaveit to the ground with a 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-2 at an electric Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Though at first, Kontaveit was looking good to ruffled Serena by going level at 1-1 with a dominant second set display.

However, Williams drew her inner warrior showing why she was champion, and then took back the driving seat in the decider, breaking Kontaveit twice before finishing her opponent and leaving the spectators in awe as they stood up to cheer her. The crown featured golf superstar Tiger Woods.

“You know this is what I do best,” a delighted Williams said after her win.

“I love a challenge and love rising to the challenge. I haven’t played many matches, but I’ve been practising really well, and my last few matches, it just wasn’t coming together…But the last couple of matches here in New York, it’s really come together.”

Williams accepted the fact that she was afraid she could lose since she could not respond as Kontaveit stepped on the accelerator to take the second set.

“I thought, Oh my goodness, I’ve got to give my best effort because this could be it,” Williams said. “I just wanted to keep trying and see what I could do and do my best.”

Recall that in 1999, Williams won the first of her Grand Slam singles titles as a 17-year-old at the US Open. With that win now, she has moved to the third round, and she is currently playing with confidence as she has the finish line in view.

“I don’t have anything to prove, I don’t have anything to win. I have absolutely nothing to lose,” she said.

Williams is billed to return to Arthur Ashe on Thursday to participate in the women’s doubles, where she will reunite with elder sister Venus for the first time since 2018.

Kontaveit, meanwhile, admitted a ferociously partisan New York crowd had rattled her.

“I expected it, but it was really hard,” Kontaveit said. “I knew it was coming. It was something I’d never experienced before.”
