End of an era: Roger Federer to retire after Laver Cup

On Thursday, Tennis legend Roger Federer made an announcement many have anticipated for a while now. He said he would retire from the ATP Tour after the upcoming Laver Cup in London.

The news did not come as a shock to many because the 20-time Grand Slam winner has been battling a bad knee for the last three years. As a result, therefore, he has decided to end a remarkable career.

Federer posted a letter on Twitter saying, “As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form.

“But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career.

“The Laver Cup, next week in London, will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour.”

Listen to the emotional and heartfelt message here:

Roger Federer had taken the road that his female counterpart, Serena Williams, took after crashing out of the US Open, losing to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. She then announced her retirement from Tennis. We hope to see them both in the nearest future in their new life outside professional tennis, supporting or mentoring tennis stars.
